Ben Gibbard

Episode-2-Single.jpg

We begin episode 2 of The DR & the DJ with a story from Amy. Following a tragedy in her family, she hits rock bottom and finds herself in an in-patient care program at the University of Washington medical center. Amy tells us how she got there and how music, community and exercise played a role in lifting her out of this low point and got her back on her feet again.

The isolation of the pandemic have been tough for both adults AND children. John and Amy talk about how they are coping with their children’s feelings of aloneness and the difficulties of conveying love for your children through rules.

The episode guest is Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service. In addition to writing, recording and touring in his rock n roll bands, Ben is an Ultra runner. He tells how about the frustration of a recent injury and what he is doing to cope with the recovery. In addition, the three speculate that the endurance athlete “mindset” may be helpful through the pandemic and the lifestyle changes that come with it. John, Amy and Ben also discuss the future of live concerts in Seattle and what it may look like for touring bands. Amy shares why we feel “in the zone” when we’re running and what roles both the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems play in feeling good when we exercise. Also, why any sort of movement can be beneficial and move us toward a more present mental state.

In Weekday Wine, John and Amy share their first experiences drinking alcohol over a fine rye whisky. Yum!
